Making adaptive radiotherapy routine in emerging markets

In August 2026, radiation oncologists, medical physicists and healthcare leaders came together in Bengaluru to discuss what it takes to implement adaptive radiotherapy in routine clinical practice. Drawing on experience from centres using MR-guided and CT-guided adaptive approaches, the discussion explored the clinical and operational realities of implementation – from patient selection and treatment planning to workflow, resources and the evidence still needed to support wider adoption. The central question: what needs to change for adaptive radiotherapy to become routine in high-volume healthcare environments?

About the event

Elekta Connect is a clinician-led program that brings radiation oncologists, medical physicists and healthcare leaders together for sustained discussion about the future of radiation oncology. Over the past year in India, it has run as symposia, masterclasses, workshops, technology showcases and KOL-led discussions. The Bengaluru Adaptive Edition, held on 5 August 2026 at the Hyatt Centric Hebbal, is the most recent, and the program is now scaling across the wider region with Kenya next.

The program covered the first clinical experience with MR-guided treatment in Karnataka, the first Indian experience with a CT-based adaptive linac, the present and future of MR-guided radiotherapy, and closed with an expert panel on making adaptive radiotherapy routine in emerging markets.

One oncologist shared the example of a rectal cancer patient where anatomical change led the team to adapt the treatment plan. The discussion highlighted an important practical question: when does a change in anatomy justify replanning, and when is the original plan still clinically appropriate?

They were just as clear about what isn’t settled. The evidence base is still being built, and there's a long way between what a department can manage for one patient on a good day and what it can deliver routinely at scale.

The Bengaluru discussion reflected a challenge shared by radiotherapy departments around the world: demonstrating what adaptive radiotherapy can achieve is only part of the journey. Making it routine means understanding where it adds value – and creating the workflows, evidence and expertise needed to deliver it consistently.
